A collection of instruments that document and capture interesting, characterful synths that may not always be the obvious choice when we think of classics. It has semi-fixed parameters, with a selection of toggle switches offering limited editing of these. It has a very fat, zappy sound and fantastic chunky coloured controls. It was quickly adopted by the likes of Brian Eno and Pink Floyd, and has been used by experimental musicians ever since.
This tube is used is the early Vox amp, up to the AC15 as power rectifier. Most vintage American amp you will be looking at require at least 3 different voltage from the transformers: a high voltage, V for the tube filaments and 5V for the rectifier.

How to get killer tones on your bedroom setup Posted on August 31st Comments Most of us spend a great deal of time playing guitar in either a bedroom or a small home recording studio. Limited space, grumpy neighbours and a patient family makes it hard to really crank that amp. Still, we all want a big and fat tone that has all the qualities of playing on a loud stack.
My home recording studio is a typically bedroom-sized room equipped with a few low wattage amps.
Vox Amps In July of two young lads from Liverpool would acquire their very first VOX amplifiers, an AC15 Twin and a Top Boost equipped AC30 Twin. Later that year, the group would emerge from the studio with a song called “Love Me Do” and change the world of popular music forever.
There was only a single tone control in it as well. The power amplifier circuit had EL34 tubes and the preamplifier used an EF86, which was a pretty unreliable tube and could fail due to vibration. The amplifier had a tube rectifier. However, the Voxes sported a thin white covering “Rexine” with a small printed diamond pattern and larger diamond pattern grill cloth. Vox initially offered a 1X12″ version and subsequently introduced the 2X12″ AC30 Twin, which solved the volume problem at larger venues.
By , Vox had forsaken the more conservative TV-front look for the now legendary cabinet design that has remained largely unchanged since The new cabinets featured a different covering known as fawn Rexine, which was a sort of beige leathercloth with a subtle printed grain. The front baffle was now divided by a thin gold-toned strip with the upper valence covered in fawn Rexine, and the lower grille covered in brown diamond cloth. Ventilation was provided by three small brass vents on the top of the cabinet, and the TV-front’s single suitcase type handle was replaced with three leather straps.
People began to refer to these amplifiers as AC30TBs. Instead, the circuits of the Treble and Bass versions were slightly modified to emphasize those frequencies.

Hank Marvin with his red Fender Stratocaster is on the left. The story of Vox guitars is so often told, not from the beginning, but with the introduction of the Vox Phantom ; Vox’s first ‘original’ guitar. But really it starts earlier than that, and is intimately linked with a British guitar band of the period: They not only used Vox amplifiers, they appeared in just about all of Vox’s early publicity, and guitarist Hank Marvin even designed a tremolo unit for Vox, fitted to high end solid bodies like the Vox Consort and Vox Phantom.
As eluded to earlier, all early Vox guitars were copies of guitars by other brands, and with some connection to the forementioned Shadows. And it was no coincidence that two of the earliest Vox guitars were copies of this:
